ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS AND PROFESSIONNAL TRAINING

MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA

Acupuncture
Equivalence and\or recognition by l'Ordre des acupuncteurs du Québec is mandatory reserved title.

  • The therapist has to be member in good standing of l'Ordre des Acupuncteurs du   Québec
  • To hold a diploma of collegial degree in acupuncture (from the Collège of Rosemont, Montreal) or the equivalent, then to have undergone the exams of accreditation of the l'Order des acupuncteurs du Québec.
  • Training intended for health's professionals (doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists and naturopath) does not exceed 300 hours. Actually, their certificate is approved by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture and American Academy of Medical Acupuncture.

Chiropractic

Recognition of l'Ordre des chiropraticiens du Québec   is mandatory reserved title.

  • University degree, Phd in chiropractic
  • Imply five years of studies (theory, practice and trainings).

Homeopathy

1500 hours, divided as follows:

  • 735 hours of homeopathic theory
  • 240 hours observation training
  • 180 hours anatomy and physiology
  • 150 hours medical pathology and microbiology
  • 135 hours of additional disciplines: energetic, nutrition, relation helping relationship, office management and ethics
  • 60 hours of individual clinical training.

Kinesitherapy

  • 1000 hours including a first technique of massage (385 hours min.)
  • To have a minimum of 2 techniques massage (of 150 hres. each)
  • Physical approach in masso-physiotherapy - (157 hours minimum)
  • Anatomy physiology pathology - (135 hours)
  • Physiopathology of the locomotor apparatus - (45 hours)
  • Postural analysis - (30 hours)
  • Body language   - (45 hours)
  • Supervised clinic - (112 hours minimum)
  • Introduction in passive mobilizations - (15 hours)
  • Synthesis and integration - (30 hours)
  • Trigger points - (15 hours)
  • Chair Massage - (15 hours)
  • Pregnancy Massage   - (15 hours)
  • Professional issues and business plan - (30 hours)

  * Studies and homework are not considered.

Massage
Practitioner in massage therapy

400 hours minimu of supervised training divided as follows:

  • Introduction (15hours)
  • Approach: 150 heures minimum. You have the choice of one of the following approaches: Swedish (190 h), Californien (190 h), Shiatsu (190 h), Esalen (190 h), Amma, Néo-reichien (210 h), Jin Shin Do (250 h minimum), Polarity (190 h), Chinese, Sport massage  (195 heures) including Trigger point (15 h), therapeutic Shiatsu  (330 heures à 480 heures), Swiss massage (1300 h)
  • Anatomy: (45 hours)
  • Physiopathology: (45 hours)
  • Professional aspects (15 hours)
  • Deontology, legal aspects: (15 hours)
  • Sexuality and professional practice: (45 hours)
  • Helping Relation: (30 hours)
  • Interview techniques: (15 hours)
  • Supervised clinic: (30 hours minimum 60 hours maximum).

Massage therapist

Prerequisite: practitioner in massage therapy level

1000 hours, including a compulsory training as practitioner in massage therapy of 400 hours and at least 600 hours of supplementary training divided as follows:

  • Approach: 150 heures minimum. You have the choice of one of the following approaches: Swedish (190 h), Californien (190 h), Shiatsu (190 h), Esalen (190 h), Amma, Néo-reichien (210 h), Jin Shin Do (250 h minimum), Polarity (190 h), Chinese, Sport massage  (195 heures) including Trigger point (15 h), therapeutic Shiatsu  (330 heures à 480 heures), Swiss massage (1300 h)
  • Student clinic and supervision: 40 hours minimum 60 hours maximum.
  • Personal integration and professional intervention (45 hours)
  • Helping relation and interview technique (45 hours)
  • Administration, marketing, file keeping (45 hours).
  • Anatomy / physiology / pathology (45 hours)
  • Optional classes of which: psychopathology, psychosomatic, helping relation, psychology, nutrition (45 hours)
  • 225 hours complements and\or improvement related to the disciplines of your choice that are recognized by the ACDM while respecting the maximums of each.
  • Additional techniques (min. 45 hours): lymphatic Drainage, sports massage, reflexology, therapeutic touch or development in a basic technique (max. 100 hours) in one of physical, energy, psycho-physical approaches recognized as practitioner. Personal growth approach gestalt, transactional analysis, rebirth, eutony, feldenkrais, psychosynthèse, bio-energy, Postural awakening: anti-gymnastic, Alexander, Feldenkrais, tai chi, mentastics, yoga. Professional improvement: physiotherapy, TRP, ergothérapy, homoeopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy, osteopathy, etiopathy, somatotherapy, nutritional approaches, aromatherapy, algotherapy.

* Works and studies at home are not considered.

Naturopathy

1000 hours, divided as follows:

  • 270 hours vitamin therapy, oligo-elements, iridology, file evaluation, etc.
  • 150 hours Phytotherapy
  • 150 hours anatomy            
  • 150 hours pathology
  • 150 hours nutrition
  • 45 hours essential oil
  • 45 hours hygiene of life
  • Containing 40 hours: professional ethics, psycho /helping relation, sexuality, legal aspect, etc.

Doctor in naturopathy

  • In Canada, the medical education of the doctors in naturopathy consists of a four years full time program, is 4000 hours, which includes notably an important clinical training in place of residence.
  • At the term of the program of four years, the students must have successfully undergone tests internationally sanctioned in naturopathy, which lead to obtaining the licence to practice from the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners before obtaining a license giving them the right to practice.

Naturothérapie

Prerequisite: Practitioner in massage therapy (400 hours)
On the top of this base training, the therapist need to add 3 approaches:

Accepted approach:

  • Aromatherapy (min. 21 hours)
  • Auriculotherapy

  • Essentielle oil
  • Reflexology

Orthotherapy

1200 hours, including works and studies or 1000 hours of supervised training, divided as follows:

  • 1-st year:           385 hours of (training (Massage therapy)
  • 2-nd year:           300 hours of training (Kinesitherapy)
  • 3-rd year:           300 hours of (training (Orthotherapy)
  • 400 hours of additional technique, advanced anatomy, pathology, etc. (1000 firm hours, works and studies at home are not considered.

Ostheopathy D.O.

Osteopathy practitioner recognition
Criteria : university degree in a health science branch or equivalent (physiotherapy, biology, pharmacy, etc.)

  • 1200 hours of osteopathy training including passing theoretical and practical exams by an osteopath jury

A registererd practitioner may issue naturopathy receipts for insurance reimbursements and has two years to terminate and succeed their theses in order to be recognized and obtain their status as an Osteopath D.O.

Completing the osteopathy practitioner studies is the prerequisite in order to accede to the osteopath D.O. formation.  The status of osteopathy practitioner may be maintained for two years.  The osteopathy practitioner must terminate and succeed his theses before an osteopath jury within this delay otherwise he will lose his status and therefore will lose his right to issue receipts.

Osteopath D.O. recognition
Condition requisite : Qualified osteopathy practitioner (1200 hours)

  • Theses succeeded in presence of an osteopath jury

An osteopath may issue osteopathy receipts for insurance reimbursements

Hypnotherapy

Training of attested hypnotherapist

120 hours divided as follows:
30 hours of introduction
45 hours of supervised clinical training

45 periods chosen among the following ones

  • 15 hours Study of the types of inductions
  • 15 hours Technique of interview, protocol and file keeping
  • 15 hours Helping relationship
  • 15 hours Suggestion's Technique
  • 15 hours Fields of knowledge in other types of therapies
  • 15 hours Anatomy of the pain
  • 15 hours Acquired behaviour vs innate
  • 15 hours Guided visualization / reinterpretation of internal mechanisms
  • 20 hours Somatic / psychosomatic disorders
  • 15 hours Pedohypnosis
  • 10 hours Ethics, legal aspects

The certificate allows to emit receipts for insurance refund and the member has one year to complete its training of 210 hours to become an certified hypnotherapist. (see certified hypnotherapist).

The training of attested hypnotherapist is a pre-requisite in the training of certified hypnothérapeute. The status of attested hypnotherapist cannot continue beyond one year. So, the " attested hypnotherapist " member has so to make sure to complete its training of supplementary 90 hours without which it will lose its title of attested hypnotherapist and consequently, will no longer be able to emit receipt.

Practical exam is required before being given evidence.

Certified Hypnotherapist (210 hours)
Pre-requisite: Attested Hypnotherapist (120 hours)

90 hours, chosen among the following ones:
(Courses chosen have to differ from those that were completed during the training of attested hypnotherapist)

  • 15 hours Study of the types of inductions
  • 15 hours Technique of interview, protocol and file keeping
  • 15 hours Helping relationship
  • 15 hours Suggestion's Technique
  • 15 hours Fields of knowledge in other types of therapies
  • 15 hours Anatomy of the pain
  • 15 hours Acquired behaviour vs innate
  • 15 hours Guided visualization / reinterpretation of internal mechanisms
  • 20 hours Somatic / psychosomatic disorders
  • 15 hours Pedohypnosis
  • 10 hours Ethics, legal aspects

Practical exam are required before being certified if the candidate didn't make the attested hypnotherapist exam.

Members accredited with the ACDM will have one of the following titles:

  • Acupunctur
  • Chiropracticien
  • Homoeopath
  • Hypnotherapist
  • Kinesitherapist
  • Massage therapist
  • Practitioner in massage therapy
  • Naturopath
  • Naturotherapist
  • Orthotherapist
  • Osteopath

You can also be the holder of 2 titles ex: Massage therapist-Naturotherapist, Kinesitherapist-Naturotherapist etc.

It is understood that the candidates should owe:

  • To meet standards required with the ACDM and hold diplomas.
  • To respect code of ethics
  • To show a stable personality.
  • To take a practical exam and if necessary, a theoretical exam proving the competence of the candidate and the validity of the presented documents.
  • Hold a high school diploma or the equivalent or to have an experiment considered to be relevant
  • Add 18 years old

MODIFICATIONS

Training hours required, for disciplines and their complements mentioned above, can prone to change.

Take note that the ACDM recognizes only the disciplines mentioned above. On the other hand, if yours is not there, additions can be considered.
