MASSAGE THERAPIST, NATUROPATH, ACUPUNCTURIST… RESERVED TITLES
by Jocelyn Vincent, translated by Mariette Troisfontaines

In Canada, each province has a jurisdiction over the regulation of recognized professional titles.

As an example, in 2007, the massage therapist title is reserved exclusively in Ontario, British Colombia, Newfoundland and Labrador.   In the other provinces, anyone can, if so desired, use the title without having apprehensions of reprisals.

The same holds true for massage therapy, naturopathy, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, chiropractic … these are also reserved titles in certain provinces.

Seeing that the laws are constantly changing, we therefore encourage each therapist to verify each year if there have been any changes or modifications in the provincial laws concerning your professional title.

The use of a reserved title could cost you a lot if you are not a member of an Order or a Corporation who manages the professional practice in question!

Usually, at the first observation of violation, a legal notice will be sent to the person who illegally uses this title and will be asked cease the use of the title immediately.   Thereafter, if the therapist still uses this reserved title, they will be liable to a fine that may go up to 25 000$ or more for a first offense.

Since each province is different, it is essential to inform your association before you move to a new province.   The association can therefore help you verify if your title granted in one province is in accordance with the other province.

To help you know the reserved titles, you may do an Internet search on the following Web site:
www.cicic.ca/934/search_the_directory_of_occupational_profiles.canada

Your association cannot be held responsible for any legislative changes in each province.   The therapist is therefore solely responsible to get these legal informations governing your profession.
